North Buncombe High Schoolers (NBHS) ventured out across the North Buncombe district to connect with future Buncombe County Schools (BCS) students in a campaign known as “Leading for Literacy”.
NBHS DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) members are leading the community service initiative this school year. DECA is a student-led organization that prepares young leaders and entrepreneurs for future careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. The organization partnered with the BCS Bookmobile to make the experience possible for everyone.
“It’s invaluable to have our high schoolers read to pre-k children,” said Business and Marketing teacher Ellie Chandler. “We are helping build language and social skills for the pre-k students in our area. Our high schoolers have the opportunity to serve their community by working alongside our youngest learners.”
Ms. Chandler said seeing her students in this environment is rewarding and reminds her why she loves to inspire young leaders to give back.
“To see my students in that environment reminds me that giving to our North Buncombe community, showing kindness, love and excitement with these pre-k kids is what creates change in this world,” she explained. “This is something we will continue to do again, and make it a tradition each school year. After spending time learning more about the Bookmobile and the 24 other sites they visit, we have set a goal to continue to visit different sites all year.”
