North Buncombe High School recently welcomed 21 EF Exchange program ambassadors from countries around the world for a firsthand look at the opportunities available to students in Buncombe County Schools.

The ambassadors visited North Buncombe as part of their work with the EF Exchange program, which connects international students and families with schools and communities across the United States.

During their visit, the ambassadors split into three groups and toured classrooms where current EF exchange students are attending school. The visits gave the ambassadors an opportunity to see students learning and participating in the school community while experiencing some of the programs and activities offered at North Buncombe.

The ambassadors also met with Interim Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Reed and North Buncombe Principal Kevin Yontz. The group had the opportunity to ask questions about academics, extracurricular activities, athletics and other opportunities available to students through Buncombe County Schools.

Seeing the school firsthand gave the ambassadors a better understanding of what an exchange student’s experience can look like in Buncombe County. They will take what they learned back to their home countries as they talk with students and families interested in spending a school year in the United States.

Visits like this also highlight the value of international exchange programs for local schools. Exchange students bring new perspectives and cultures into our classrooms, while also becoming part of the school communities they call home during their time in Buncombe County.
