The Buncombe County Schools Foundation (BCSF) celebrated the dedication and resilience of BCS educators, staff, and community partners during its annual Education Celebration, held May 29 at Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy.

The event recognized outstanding contributions from teachers, principals, and support staff across the district, with special attention given to the collective strength of the Buncombe County Schools community in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

“This year’s celebration was especially meaningful,” said BCSF Director Christy Cheek. “We honored not only individual achievements but also the resilience and unity of our entire school community.”

Guests enjoyed a variety of hors d’oeuvres prepared and served by students from Erwin High School’s Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter.

“The support from our students at Erwin was outstanding,” Cheek said. “Their professionalism and culinary talents were on full display and played a key role in the event’s success.”

A highlight of the evening was the introduction of the district’s previously named Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year. North Buncombe High School Welding Teacher Darryl Fox and T.C. Roberson High School Principal Nathan Allison were recognized before community donors and supporters, with each taking a moment to speak and share reflections on their roles in education.

In a special tribute, Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson accepted a special plaque on behalf of all BCS staff for their resilience and dedication in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

“These moments celebrate more than just professional excellence,” said Cheek. “They honor compassion, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to our students.”

Hosted annually, the Education Celebration underscores BCSF’s mission to enhance educational experiences through scholarships, classroom grants, and community partnerships. The foundation continues to support initiatives that uplift both students and staff throughout the district.
