Proficient & Advanced Art (Honors)

Welcome back!

Proficient Art is designed to foster more independence than Art I or Art II.  You’ll have the opportunity to focus more intently on the mediums and concepts that interest you, while continuing to grow technically.  We will be looking at post-modern and contemporary art, and your place as an artist.  You will explore the conceptual side of art, and will be doing analytical writing in this course.  There will still be some smaller daily assignments, but the main focus will be on the larger projects and writing assignments you undertake and on our critiques.  As this is an honors credit, I will be expecting higher effort, understanding, and quality from your work.
Advanced Art is designed to allow for a much higher degree of creativity and individualization  than your previous art courses.  Though I will be here to guide you and provide you with critical feedback, the art series you develop will be largely self-directed.  You will grow essential technical and conceptual skills as you develop your own artistic portfolio.  There will still be some smaller daily assignments, but the main focus will be on the larger art projects you create and the portfolio pieces you write.  This course aligns with the beginning structure of AP art, and is a recommended prerequisite if you’ll be taking AP in the spring.  As this is an honors credit, I will be expecting higher effort, understanding, and quality from your work.

LMS:  We will do most work in person, but will use Google Classroom for some minor assignments and to turn in photographed work.  I’ll give you a join code on the first day of class.

Materials Needed:  The supply list will be posted in Google Classroom, but I can provide a paper copy.  Please let me know if you need help getting any supplies; I may have some extras!

Attendance Policy:  We are back to our regular attendance procedures.  Missed assignments can be found on Google Classroom.  Email attendance notes to nbhs.attendance@bcsemail.org

Grading Categories for Proficient Art:

Projects - 30%

Critical Writing - 25% (there are not many of these, so each one will weigh in heavily)

Sketchbook assignments - 25%

Daily work - 20%

Grading Categories for Advanced Art:

Projects - 30%

Critical Writing/Portfolio Assignments - 30%

Sketchbook assignments - 25%

Daily work - 15%

Late assignments will be docked 10pts per week, starting the day after they are due.

Extra Credit: opportunities will occur throughout the grading period, and I may consider working with you on an individual basis if you request to work on a larger extra credit assignment.  This opportunity and the amount of credit received will be up to my discretion, but it generally works out in your favor to just make up your missing assignments instead :)

Cheating: Unless I specifically tell you to practice copying something, your artwork (and all other work) needs to be your own.  Don’t copy things from the internet - have fun coming up with your own creations!  Copied work may not be graded, and cheating on a test or quiz will result in a zero and call home.
