Minkin, Sherrie - CTE/Health Science

 Welcome to my Classroom

Sherrie L. Minkin, RN- Health Occupations Instructor

North Buncombe High School

Hello Everyone. I want to tell you a little bit about myself....
I graduated from North Buncombe High School in 1979. Both my children also graduated from here as well. I live in Weaverville and love this area. We have the best students at this high school and I can't imagine teaching anywhere else!
I have been a registered nurse for over 30 years and have worked in the operating room for at least 25 years of that time. I have always wanted to teach so this job teaching at North Buncombe is my dream job!
Health Team Relations is our freshman and foundation course we offer.  It goes heavily into Medical Terminology, which is needed for all health science classes.
We also teach Health Science I, which is anatomy of the body, and Health Science II, which is about our health care system. These two courses are needed to prepare you to take Nursing Fundamentals as well as completing your career cluster for Health Sciences.
For the 2016-17 school year, I will be teaching Nursing Fundamentals spring semester. This is a course offered where you can obtain your certified nursing assistant at the end of the course. This is a very competitive class and is offered both semesters. There is an application process you must complete. This is only for seniors and there is a maximum of 10 students per class. The application for this class may be found on my website under Nursing Fundamentals.
We have three courses that are offered at the Honors level, Health Science I, Health Science II and Nursing Fundamentals.
We also have an active and fun Health Occupations Students of America chapter. We had several district winners this year that went on to compete in the NC-HOSA competition. This is open to any health science student.
Tena Cole, RN is our other health science teacher here at North Buncombe. We have a great health science program that continues to grow every year. Mrs. Cole and I love sharing our vast experience in health care with our students! Next year we will have a total of 4o Nursing Fundamentals students!
If you have any questions or are interested in health care come visit me in room 110!
