North Buncombe FFA Shines at State, Nat'l Competitions

North Buncombe High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter has been busy racking up the awards this fall. Under the leadership of FFA adviser and teacher Justin Gillespie, students competed in livestock events at Raleigh’s NC State Fair and the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

More student results are available in the latest Buncombe County Schools CTE newsletter, but here are some highlights:    FFA competition

At the State Fair, Silver Hyatt made the first cut in senior showmanship and earned third place in the Market Goat Show. Aislinn Stroupe placed fourth in the Commercial Heifer Class. Shelby Candler earned three first place finishes and a second place finish in various Simmental and Hereford classes.

At the National convention, North Buncombe’s Livestock Evaluation team bought home the silver medal thanks to the hard work of Silver Hyatt, Shelby Candler, Trent Deweese, and Cole Gillespie. Silver and Shelby each earned silver medals, while Trent and Cole each earned bronze medals.
